                  Місто Борислав
                  Місто Борислав
Title: City Boryslav. Status: City of regional subordination in Drohobych district of Lviv region. Location: The city is located in the south central part of the Drohobych district on the river Tysmenytsia, 95 km from Lviv. Area: 37 sq. km. Population: about 41,000 inhabitants. River: Tysmenytsia. The first mention in historical documents: March 19, 1387. Historical note: Boryslav got its name from the monastery, around which later the village of the same name appeared. Its southern part was called "Potik", and north - "Novyi Svit". Modern Boryslav located on the territory of ancient settlements - Boryslav, Bania Kotovs'ka, Gubichi, Mraznitsia, Tustanovichi that since the second half of 19 c. were quickly built up and were merged into one city in the early 20 c. The first written mention of Boryslav occurs in the charter of Jadwiga, Queen of Poland, on March 19, 1387. In the 15-18 cc. Boryslav was a center of salt production in Ukraine. Hence the salt carried in Lithuania, Poland, Hungary and Romania. In the late 18 c. the decline of salt comes, and Boryslav becomes small inconspicuous village. It lasted until the beginning of oil production. After the first partition of Poland (1772) Boryslav as the part of the Eastern Galicia fell under the rule of Habsburg (later - the Austrian (Austro-Hungarian) Empire). Since the mid-19 c. Boryslav became a famous industrial center of production and refining of oil, ozokerite and gas. Boryslav's deposit of ozokerite (it was open in 1854 by Lviv industrialist Robert Doms) was one of the largest in the world in reserves and production level. At the beginning the oil exploration was made by digging wells, and since 1861 oil started to be extracted through wells drilled by R. Doms. On December 31, 1872 in Boryslav the railroad began to function. U.S., Canada, Belgium, France, Germany firms led a ruthless exploitation of deposits, while paying no attention to environmental protection and safety. Death and disability were common in the oil fields. Environment has been irreparably damaged. Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, author of the story "Boryslav laughs", called Boryslav "Galicia hell". According to the decree of the Council of Ministers of Poland, on May 20, 1930 to Boryslav surrounding settlements were added, which formed the modern Boryslav. Oil production was severely damaged during the global economic crisis and continued to fall further due to the depletion of deposits. However, as a result of new discoveries in 1969 there was the maximum level of oil production in Boryslav - 569,000 tons. Main attractions: the wooden St. John the Baptist church, the Pokrova Bohoroditsi church, the Perenesennya Moshiv St. Mykoly church and the Uspinnya Presvyatoi Bohoroditsi temple.
