The museum is located on the territory of the Shevchenko National Reserve in Kanev and is located 4 km south of the center of Kanev. The museum was built by the architect Vasily Krichevsky and Peter Kostyrko. From 2004 to 2010 the museum was reconstructed by the architect Larisa Skorik. The museum collection includes more than 20,000 items, which are decorated with memorial items and etchings of Taras Shevchenko, rare editions of his works, highly artistic works of Ukrainian and foreign artists, masterpieces of folk art, valuable archival documents, photo and film materials, audio and video recordings of famous bandura players and kobzars. Politician and historian Igor Sharov presented the Kanevsky Museum of Taras Shevchenko with a portrait of Kobzar 1910 by the classic of Ukrainian painting and graphics Photius Krasitsky.
