The history of the cathedral began when the governor Janos X Drugets invited to Uzhhorod in 1640 a monastic order of Jesuits. First collegial church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was low. In 1732-1740 it was rebuilt in Baroque style. In 1773, after the edict of Pope Clement XIV to liquidate a religious order of Jesuits, monks left Uzhgorod. After a short wandering church premises transferred ownership Greek Catholic Diocese. Architect F. Hilebrand in 1779 graduated from its restructuring as a cathedral. That's when the interior was present altar (Tech Master Francis, 1799) and Others decor items. Above the additional decoration of churches in turn worked Bishop Vasyl Popovych (1846), painter Ferdinand Otter. Major changes were introduced on the initiative of Bishop John Pasteliya. In 1812 a large storm damaged one of the bell. Although in 1877 to work under the guidance of architect Laszlo Fabry been completed. After the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church temple was transferred to the Orthodox Church. During Soviet rule many memorable tables destroyed, looted burial. Only 7 January 1991 after several years fighting the temple back to the ancient masters.
