One of the few surviving monuments today fortification construction in Lviv. With dozens of powerful Lviv defense towers, gates and bastions to the present time only one survived - Powder Tower. It was built with stones of the old city arsenal. It was the most powerful tower, because on this side under the city walls often appeared invaders from the East - the thickness of its walls is 2,5-3 m. The tower stands on the ground defensive ramparts, remaining from ancient times, as in the nineteenth century. they built a park, called the Governor's ramparts, because the residence was located near the Austrian governor of Galicia. Powder Tower was part of the outer defense system of the medieval city, which consisted of shafts and towers located on them. In peace time served for storing grain. The tower was built with stone ramshackle, four-, semicircular (horseshoe) in the plan. Covered tiled gabled roof. In 1954 the tower was reconstructed. Since 1959, there is the eye of the Board of the Lviv branch of the Union of Architects of Ukraine. This year the entrance to the tower guarded by two lions in white marble of the XIX century, which marked a great artistic value. In 1973 restoration done - remove the outer plaster, exposed loopholes, later established the window.
