Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore, one of the oldest museums in Ukraine, was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century. on the wave of a general rise in interest in the study of nature and history of the region. The great predecessors of modern museologists first came together in the mid-nineteenth century. around the Volyn Provincial Statistical Committee. The museum collection was started in 1865 by a small collection of minerals, which grew rapidly through the efforts of scientists, local historians and collectors and was stored and exhibited in the public library until 1911. Today the museum preserves more than 150 thousand monuments of nature, history and culture of the region. The most interesting among them are: material monuments from the Raikovets settlement of the IX-XIII centuries; samples of clothes, carpets and handicrafts of Zhytomyr Polissya of different periods; books from the Ghana-Zhevuski library; memorial items of prominent compatriots. The decoration of the museum is a collection of Western European art of the 16th - early 20th centuries. The art department of the museum, established in 1919, has included parts of nationalized private collections, including the most famous Volyn collections of Barons de Shoduar (Zhytomyr) and Ilinsky-Stetsky from the town of Romaniv.
