Title: City Rava-Rus'ka Status: The city of district level in Zhovkva district of Lviv region. Location: The city is situated on the river Rata, near the western border of Ukraine. Area: 8,5 sq. km. Population: about 8,000 inhabitants. River: Rata. Mount: Vovkovytsia (349 m above sea level). Year of foundation: 1455, city status was obtained in 1939. Historical note: First settlements in the place of city Rava-Rus'ka were founded in 11 c. A.D. The city Rava-Rus'ka is first mentioned in documents of 15 c. It is Known, that in 1455 the Belz and Mazovets prince Vladislaw named a small settlement on the river Rata "Rava" with addition of word "Rus'ka", to distinguish it from other his possession - Rava-Mazovets'ka, which was located on territory of Poland. Long time Rava-Rus'ka remained a small town. A greater value the city purchased in 17 century due to the animated trade-routes from the east to the west, which Rava stood on. Handicrafts and trade began to develop in the city. In 1622 to the city the privileges were given on realization of annual fairs. On these fairs merchants went down from all Poland. The city was the center of important international events of 17-18 cc. In 1698 the three-day negotiations of Russian tsar Peter І, who returned from Vienna, and Polish king August ІІ, who went at the head of troops against the Turkish sultan, took place here. On August, 3, 1698 monarchs agreed about general actions against Swedes. In 1704 in Rava-Rus'ka Swedish king Karl ХІІ with king of Rzech Pospolyta Stanislav Lishyns'kyi met. Kings co-ordinated the plans in a fight against Peter І. However these plans could not come true. In 1716 in the city also there were important negotiations between S. Lishyns'kyi and August ІІ. In 1862 a strong fire happened in the city, but the catastrophe was a fire on August, 20, 1884. Then 243 dwelling houses (15 one-story) burned out. Hebrews occupied the part of city, which burned out, mainly; only 9 houses belonged to the Christians. General losses after the fire were made by 500000 zloty. A considerable revival in development of city was observed in connection with building in 1887 of railway ways Sokal - Yaroslav and Lviv - Belzets. Rava-Rus'ka became a railway knot and a typical small town with a shallow private production and trade. In 1919 in Rava-Rus'ka there were persistent fights of the І Corps of the Ukrainian Galichina army with the Polish army. In 1939 Rava-Rus'ka, together with other territories of Western Ukraine, entered in the complement of the USSR. After establishment of Soviet power the city began to develop intensively. After encroachment on territory of the district on June, 27, 1941 nazis organized mass elimination of its habitants, and also prisoners of war. During occupation 41 500 persons were killed in the district. 17 000 hebrews were killed in the city, and 13 000 Poland were taken in Germany. Main attractions: the St. Joseph Church, the St. Michael Monastery, the St. George (Yura) Church, the monastery of the Order of Dominican, City Hall.
