National shrine of the Ukrainian people, a place of worship to the prominent poet-prophet of Taras Shevchenko. Probably on the mountain in the XI century was based Kanevsky cave monastery. In the mid-XIX, visiting these places, Shevchenko wants to buy land here to build a homestead, but his plans were not realized. After the death in St. Petersburg, Shevchenko was first buried in the Smolensk cemetery, however, at the insistence of the public, May 10, 1861 coffin of the poet was taken to Kanev. According to the will, he was buried on a high Dnieper steeper, which has since called Tarasova mountain. Was poured on the grave mound, and a cross. Museum Tarasova Svitlytsia "opened in the former home of the grave keeper Igor Yadlovskogo. In 1925 Shevchenko National Preserve was created in Kanev. In 1939 he established the largest monument in Ukraine, Shevchenko built staircase of 342 steps to the fountain "Lily". In 2010, after years of restoration opened the literary-memorial museum of Taras Shevchenko.
