Askold's Tomb - a part of the picturesque park, which is situated on the slopes of the right bank of the Dnieper River, located between the Dnieper and the descent of the Mariinsky park. This is one of the famous historical places of Kiev. Askold's Grave appeared in place of the Hungarian tract. This area has long been linked to the legend about the murder of Askold and Dir. Here was the Princely court, which according to legend, deceit penetrated Varangian Viking Oleg and his troops arrived in Kiev on boats on the Dnieper. Posing as a merchant, he invited Askold and Dir in the trade meeting to the Dnieper River, and there they were attacked by soldiers and killed them. Legend tells us that over the tomb of Prince Askold 50 years later built a church, which was named after St. Nicholas, as Nick - a name which took Askold at baptism in 867 year. At the end of the XVIII century at Askold grave appeared necropolis - the first monastery, and later citywide. In this cemetery were buried around 2000 people, among them many famous and wealthy people of Kiev - philosophers, writers, actors, engineers, and composers. In particular - the author of "dead loop" Russian airman Nesterov, Professor of Medicine, Franz Mehring, M. Solovtsov theatrical figure. There were a lot of group burials - in 1918 at Askold grave buried the Red Guards who fought for the Kiev, and later the young patriots who died on the steep, defending Kiev from the Bolsheviks, then Petliura Cossacks. Cemetery existed at Askold's grave before the beginning of XX century. In 1934 on the orders of the Soviet authorities necropolis was eliminated and in its place a park. Only a few graves were moved to other cemeteries. During the occupation of Kiev by German troops at Askold's grave was located a cemetery of German soldiers and officers after the liberation of Kiev this cemetery eliminated. In 1943 there were buried the Soviet soldiers, the liberators of Kiev, the ashes are later transferred to the Park of Eternal Glory.
