Theatre originated in Uzhgorod after in 1864 the local intelligentsia began to raise funds for the construction of a stationary housing for Muse Melpomene. The process lasted much land through elections, and only in 1906 city council adopted the final decision. Construction is actively resisted deputies Jews who believed that the theater would be unacceptably close to the synagogue building. Despite everything, the theater began to work and even gave shelter local Jewish amateur troupe. Performances were held in Hungarian, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak and even the Romany language. From 1921 till 1929th here worked Ukrainian professional theater, which three years led the famous director and actor Nicholas Sadowski (Tobilevych). Since 1988 works at the Transcarpathian regional puppet theater, now known far beyond Ukraine and Europe to its International Festival of Puppet, which has traditionally come puppeteers from around the world.
