One of the most ancient monasteries on territory of Ukraine, central monastery of the Galichina diocese of UGCC. The monastery was founded at the end of 14 c. by prince Fedor Lubartovich. The monastery was a defensive complex, which was alike the fixed feudal castles. Buildings of monastery were led around by fortress walls with loop-holes and four angular towers. At the side of court the apartments of monastic cells joined to the walls. High billow and deep ditch filled with water, which surrounded the monastery, were here until beginning of 19 c. The tombstone of the prince Lahodovs'kyi is preserved in the monastery - one of the best standards of Western-Ukrainan sculpture of epoch of Renaissance. In 17-18 cc. a printing-house, which printed ancient books, operated at the monastery. After including of edge in the Austrian empire the monastery was closed and reconstructed as the residence of metropolitan. Monastic life was revived by metropolitan Andriy Sheptits'kyi. In 1919 the monastery got status of lavra. A main sacred object of monastery is a copy of Univ miraculous icon of our Lady. In Soviet times on territory of monastery there was a prison, and then - an establishment for mentally sick women. Today the monastery is returned to UGCC. It consists of church, partly saved fortress walls with two north and south-west towers (15 c.), building of monastic cells (17-19 cc.) and house of metropolitan (19 c.). Restorations and alterations changed the primary look of ensemble. The monument belongs to unique works of defensive architecture of Ukraine.
