Name: City Brody. Status: The city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Brody district. Location: Brody is located in the north-eastern part of region, about 100 km from Lviv. Area: 8.67 sq. km. Population: about 30,000 inhabitants. River: Suhovilka (tributary of Styr) The first mention in the documents: 1084, the status of the city was received in 1584. Historical note: The first written mention of the city appeared in 1084 in the "Instruction of Vladimir Monomakh". While the settlement was located on the border of Galich and Volyn Principalities. In 1441 Brody passed into the possession of the Polish nobleman Jan Seninskyi. Since 1511 the settlement belongs to Podolsk magistrates Kamenetskii. In 1584 Stanislav Zolkiewski - belzsky governor - bought Brody. He received from King Stefan Batory right at the base of the city and founded the city Lubich (in honor of the family coat of arms). But the name of the city Lubich did not stick, and in less than 10 years the city has again called Brody. In 1629 from Zolkiewski Brody were transferred to Stanislav Konetspolskyi, who has served as Grand Hetman of Rzecz Pospolita (the third person in Poland after the King and the Chancellor) in 1631 and Brody turned to his residence. Designed by the French engineer de Boplan, under the supervision of Andrea del Akvy, Brody turned into a fortress city. Defense system of the city was crowned with Brodsky castle, which was situated on the western outskirts of the city. The city was a major military base of the Poles during the Liberation War of B. Khmelnitsky and reflected Tatar-Turkish aggression in the second half of 17 century. After the partition of Poland, Brody moved to Austria. It was the second largest (after Lviv) city of Galicia. Until 1918 the border between Austria-Hungary and Russia was held near Brody. Until 1939 Brody were part of the Rzecz Pospolita II. In July 1944 under Brody the SS Division Galicia first entered in battle with the Red Army. In stubborn fighting in the "Brody pot" it was almost completely destroyed. Main attractions: Brody Castle, Palace of Pototsky, the ruins of the synagogue, the defensive Bohoroditsi Church, the Triytsi Church and the bell tower, the St. Yuri Church, the parish church.
