Title: City Horodok Status: The city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Gorodok district. Location: The city is situated near the river Vereschitsa, 25 km from Lviv. Area: 30 sq. km. Population: 16,000 inhabitants. River: Vereschitsa (left tributary of the Dniester River). Year of foundation: 11-13 centuries. First mentioned in historical documents: 1213. Historical note: Horodok was founded during the period of Kyiv Rus and intensively developed during the Galicia-Volyn Principality (11-14 cc.). Already in the early 13 c. Horodok played an important role in the economic and political life of the Galicia-Volyn principality. Vereschitsa River, which flows into the Dniester, was a shipping at that time. Horodok laid on an important trade route. At that time the city had an enormous economic significance as an important center of trade with salt, so that contemporaries called it the "Horodok Solyanoy". After the conquest of Galicia by Polish principality in 14 c., already in 1387 Horodok, as a royal town, became a member of Lviv district. Since 1387 till 1434 Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Wladyslaw II Jagiello was a frequent visitor in Horodok, where he died in 1434. In 15 c. and early 16 c. Horodok suffered severe disruptions of the Crimean Tatars. Only to the 16 century the city gradually revived. The town received the right to sell salt, and once again became the center of salt production. Fish, which have long been bred and caught in local ponds, was important export item. In the 14-17 centuries Horodok was a city of artisans. The artisans have been combined in 12 departments. Wood and leather crafts were well-developed. In the second half of the 17-18 cc. the city went into decline. Invasion of Turkish troops has caused great harm to the town. In 1672, the Turkish Pasha Omar Ali captured the city and destroyed it. In 18 c. the city was rebuilt. During the World War I in 1914 on the outskirts of Horodok a well-known in the history Gorodotska battle between the Russian and Austrian armies took place. On June 27, 1941 occupation of Horodok by German troops began. During the war, over 1200 people were brought as forced laborers to Germany, more than 7 thousands were shot and taken to death camps. German troops have formed in Horodok the ghetto, where more than 6 thousand Jews were killed. On July 25, 1944 the city was invaded by Soviet troops. Main attractions: the St. Nicolas church with a bell tower, the wooden Ivanivs'ka church, a Catholic church with a bell tower, City Hall.
