Title: City Stryi Status: The city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Stryiskyi area. Location: The city is located on the left bank of the river Stryi, in the Galician Carpathian region. Area: 17 sq. km. Population: 60,000 inhabitants. River: Stryi The first mention in historical documents: 1385, city status was obtained in 1431. Historical note: In 1431 Stryi became a city according the Magdeburg Right. The development of the city was influenced by its geographical location - the city stands at the crossroads of major routes through the Carpathian Mountains - Lviv-Mukachevo and the Pre-Carpathians. In the second half of 17 c. the city was in the period of greatest prosperity (the development was assisted by King Jan Sobieski). In 18 c. the city had fallen into disrepair. In the years 1772-1918 Stryi was part of the possessions of the Habsburgs (since 1804 - Austrian Empire) and was the county seat, and later - a district town and the center of the district court. The city's population consisted of Jews, Poles and Ukrainians. Nazi troops occupied the city on July 2, 1941. In mid-November 1941, the German operational command shot in the woods near Stryi almost the entire Jewish population. In the Soviet period industry was rapidly developing and population was increased. Main attractions: the Presvyatoi Divy Marii church, the Mary Magdalene church, the People's House.
