Title: City Zolochiv Status: The city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Zolochiv district. Location: The city is located on the motorway Lviv-Ternopil-Uman, 64 kilometers from Lviv. Area: 11.64 sq. km Population: 23,000 inhabitants. River: Zolochivka. The first mention in historical documents: 1424. Historical note: Exact date of foundation of Zolochiv and origin of the name of the city are unknown. In the days of ancient Plisnes'k (15 km from Zolochiv) on the site of Zolochiv the legendary settlement Radeche stood, which was destroyed by enemy raids in the early 13 century. The inhabitants fled into the surrounding swamps. There they built houses, moving with the help of oak piles, driven into the bog. In the early 20 century, when in the city the water pipes were laid, these ancient "roads", preserved in the peat, were found. The first written mention of the city, which was found in archival documents, refers to 1423. In the 15-16 cc. Zolochiv lived a traditional urban life. During this period of history the city has successfully developed, despite the numerous Tatar raids. Zolochiv was surrounded by a rampart and a moat, was additionally protected by a fortress on the hill. In 1523 the town was granted Magdeburg rights. Its convenient location contributed to the development of trade and crafts. In the 17 - early 18 cc. in the city a new castle, monasteries, churches were built. At that time in Zolochiv there were two Ukrainian churches, Catholic church, Armenian church, three monasteries. In 1772 Zolochiv joined the Austrian Empire. Main attractions: Zolochivs'kyi castle, Zolochivs'kyi yard (Boyarsky Dvor, Boyarsky collection), the St. Nicolas Church, the Voskresinnya Hospodnyoho Church, the Uspinnya Divy Marii Church, the Basilian Monastery.
