Title: City Drohobych Status: city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Drohobych district (the city is not included in the district). Location: The city is located in the southeastern part of the Lviv region, on the river Tismenitsa, 86 km from Lviv. Area: 44.5 sq. km Population: 77,000 people. Rivers: Tismenitsa, Pobuk. Year of foundation: 1091, first mention in historical documents: 1238. Historical note: Drogobych appeared about the 11 th century in an area that was rich in salt springs, which the salt was been mined long from. In the historic "List of Russian cities, far and near" ("The Voskresens'ka Chronicle, 1377-1382) "Drugabets" is listed as one of the largest settlements that existed in those days - such as Holm and Lviv. In the years 1340-1772 Drohobych was the center of Przemysl district in the Russian province. In 1772, after the first partition of Poland, the city joined to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1775, in Drohobych one of the first Ukrainian schools in Galicia opened. In the mid-19th century in the city industrial boom began. On the outskirts of it industrial development of ozokerite, and eventually of oil and gas appeared. In 1866 here the first in Central Europe refinery, and in 1910 - the second were built. Thanks Drohobych the Empire ranked third in the world in oil production. In 1918 in the city the power of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed. Since 1919 till 1939 Drohobych was a part of the Polish state. In September 1939 the city was invaded by German troops, and after a few days - by the Red Army. Since 1 July 1941 till August 6, 1944 Drohobych was occupied by Nazi Germany again. On August 6, 1944 Drohobych was liberated by the Soviet Army. Main attractions: Musical Drama Theatre named after Yuri Drohobych, Museum, Museum of Bruno Schulz, City Philharmonic, the St. Yuri church, the Vozdvizhennya Chesnoho Khresta Church, the St. Bartholomew church, the Sts.
