                  Title: City Yavoriv Status: The city of regional significance in the Lviv region, the administrative center of Yavoriv district. Location: The city is located 50 km to the north-west of Lviv, on the river Shklo. Area: 23.35 sq. km Population: about 13,500 inhabitants. River: Shklo. The first mention in historical documents: 1376. Historical note: it is believed that the city name is derived from the word "yavir" - poplar, a large number of which grows in the valley of Shklo. According to another opinion, this name is derived from the name of the legendary Duke Javir mentioned by ancient Russian chronicles 13-14 cc. In 1569 the city received Magdeburg rights. Until 1772 the city was trade and craft center in the way Lviv - Jaroslav. It is known that because of the support of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (1648) 10 citizens were executed by the Poles and the city imposed indemnities. In the second half of 17 century Yavoriv was a fortified city, which often king Jan Sobieski stayed in. Yavoriv was one of the favorite cities of the Polish king. Here in Yavoriv, in 1711 Peter I became engaged with the future Empress Catherine I. After a second partition of Poland (1772) Yavoriv became part of Austria (since 1867 - Austro-Hungarian Empire). In 1772 Yavoriv got the status of a free city, which the German colonists, who founded here various enterprises, moved to. Since 19 c. till 1939 Yavoriv was a district town. Before joining the Red Army on Sept. 26, 1939 in Yavoriv, the Luftwaffe bombed the city, because of that the historic Great suburb was destroyed. Main attractions: the Sts.
