Городище літописного міста Белз

The ancient Russian city Belz stood on the banks of the river Solokiya, which flows into the Western Bug. On three sides the city was protected by a rampart, on the southern side - by steep descent. Inside the city was divided by the rampart, which separated the city castle from the outskirts. According to the "Tale of Bygone Years" in 1030 Belz was a big city. In the annals another date is mentioned too - 1188, in connection with the prince's power struggles. At that time Belz was the residence of the younger prince of Volyn. Remnants of the ancient city Belz are located in the natural boundary Zamochok on the low left bank of the river Solokiya between its current and old riverbeds. Fortified part of the settlement consisted of two parts - Detinets (fortress) and the collateral city. The fortification buildings of this part are conserved - the ditches and ramparts. The fortress (area - about 4 ha) was rectangular (220 m x 190 m). On the perimeter it was surrounded by rampart, which consisted of wooden crates, covered with soil. The roundabout city (an area - about 3 ha), adjacent to the castle from the south-east, was reinforced by ramparts on three sides (except the side facing the castle). Also, the town was surrounded by unfortified small settlements, which occupied adjacent hills among the swampy lowlands. During the archaeological excavations the remains of houses with mud floors, household pits, the remains of a potter's furnace were found. Among the finds - old Russian pottery, tools, knives, battle axes, arrowheads, spurs, fragments of glass beads, the bone products, lead stamp. The vast majority of the finds is dated to 11-14 centuries, materials of 12-13 cc. are prevalent.
