Title: City Hlyniany. Status: The city of district level in Zolochiv district of Lviv region. Location: The city is located 10 km from the railway station Krasne and 41 km east of Lviv. Area: 5.45 sq. km. Population: about 5,000 inhabitants. Rivers: Perehnoivka, Tymkovets'ky Potik. The first mention in historical documents: 1379. Historical note: Near the city the famous Hlyniany site of ancient settlement of the late Paleolithic period is located. In ancient times, the locals preferred to build houses out of clay. According to this there was a name of the town. In 1379 Hlyniany became the property of the Polish king, although the settlement existed before. Probably, it is older than Lviv. Magdeburg Rights the settlement received in 1397 by decree of King Vladislav II Jagiello. He also gave Hlyniany estate to family of Krushelnyts'ky. About the status of royal town the old coat of arms of Hlyniany told: a golden crown on a red background. In 1578 the city got right to hold three fairs a year. The city stood at the crossroads of trade routes, that is why the business of local merchants and artisans was succesful. However, the city stood in the way of the Golden Horde. Therefore, in Hlyniany in 1603 the wooden castle, surrounded by a deep moat, was built. The town was also a gathering place of the king's troops before the campaign. It is well known that in 1866 in the city the school of weavers was opened. The city Hlyniany is inscribed in the register of historic settlements of Ukraine.
