Title: City Rudky. Status: The city of district level in Sambir district of Lviv region. Location: The city is located in the northern part of the valley of the river Vyshnia, 25 km from the district center (Sambor). Area: 3,8 sq. km. Population: about 6,000 inhabitants. River: Vysheh'ka, Vyshnia. Year of foundation: 1472. Historical note: The first settlement on the site of the town appeared about the III millennium BC. In 14 c. Rudky was the farm of village Ben'kova Vyshnia (now the village Vyshnia). As a separate village Rudky was mentioned first in 1472. In the 15-17 cc. the village was part of the Russian lands of Przemysl province of the Rzecz Pospolyta. Rudky was often subjected to devastating attacks by Polish and foreign forces during the wars waged by feudal Rzecz Pospolita as well as during the attacks of the Tatars. Advantageous location on the trade route Lviv - Sambir contributed to further development of Rudky. During the war of national liberation of the Ukrainian people in 1648-1654 Rudky, which has already been declared as a city, was destroyed by Polish troops and Tatars. Some residents were captured by Tatars, other died from epidemics. During the Polish-Turkish war of 1672-1676 the city Rudky was attacked by the Tatars again. In the first half of the 18 c. Rudky got Magdeburg Rights, which legalized its status of city. However, in early 70-ies of 18th c. the city did not differ from the village. The main occupation of the population was agriculture. Trade and crafts were local in nature and served primarily the residents of the city, farmers from nearby estates, and partly - from the surrounding villages. In 1772 Rudky as part of Galicia was ruled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the years 1782-1918 it was a small city in Sambir district, and in 1867 it became the center of the county. Prior to Sept. 17, 1939 Rudky were a district city of Poland in the possession of Polish magnates. In 1894 the vocational school was open, which trained craftsmen for weaving baskets made of twigs. Trade and industry in Rudky were promoted by the construction in 1903 the railroad Lviv - Sambor and a railway station. On September 17, 1939 the city became part of Soviet Ukraine. In 1963-1964 Rudky were part of the Horodok district. City Rudky are listed as one of historic settlements in Ukraine. Main attractions: the Uspinnya Divy Marii Catholic church.
