Garden Shevchenko joins one of the oldest streets in the city with the largest area in Europe. More than 200 years ago this area was the outskirts of Kharkov. The garden was laid out in the years 1804-1805 Basil Nazarovich Karazin - the founder of Kharkiv University. A breakdown of the garden was carried out in the existing natural oak grove on the outskirts of the city. On the upper terrace is landscaped park at the bottom - Botanical. Since its inception, the garden was called the university. In 1808 the garden was built astronomical observatory. In 1896, at the western extremity of the park was opened by the oldest in Ukraine, the third oldest in the Russian Empire Kharkov zoo. In 30-ies of XX century was reconstructed park. She spent the architect VP Shirshov, Professor AI Kolesnikov and dendrologist KD Kobezsky. Were built new paths, planted trees and bushes, there was a fountain. After the unveiling of the monument of Taras Shevchenko in 1935 the garden was renamed in honor of the poet. At the garden is a monument soccer ball, TG Shevchenko, VN Kazarin, Archangel Michael, elders. In 1955, the garden appeared unusual cascading staircase with fountains and an observation deck.
