                  Founded in 1983, it is housed in the building of the former women's gymnasium on Val - the territory of an ancient Detinets. The building was built in 1899 (architect D. Savitsky), the building area is more than 4 thousand square meters. m. It is assumed that the collection was started by a colleague of I. Mazepa, who later went over to the side of Peter I, the Ukrainian colonel Ignatius Galagan, it was replenished by his descendants, in particular the famous statesman Grigory Pavlovich Galagan. Currently, the Chernihiv Art Museum has over five thousand exhibits. The museum has departments of Western European art of the 16th-19th centuries, Ukrainian and Russian art of the 17th-early 20th centuries, and the Soviet period.
