The museum is one of the oldest in Ukraine. In the halls you can see seven thousand exhibits, telling about the history of the region from ancient times to the mid-twentieth century. Among them - the real rarities such as world-renowned Kernosovsky Idol III millennium BC, and the statue of pharaoh Ramses VI named .., Chumackiy cart and coach travel times of Catherine II in the South, the first Soviet tractor and legendary BM 13 ("Katyusha" .) Its exhibits are the Polovtsian "women." Atmosphere rooms of the museum provides a glimpse into the ancient times, feel the spirit of the past and the uniqueness of each historical period, the inextricable link between generations. The building is an architectural monument of national importance. Especially for the museum under the supervision of architects G.K.Sandetskyi and G.I.Panafutin in 1905 the premises were build on the model of Hoffman House in Berlin. Historical Museum was founded in 1849 as the "Museum of Antiquities Ekaterinoslav province." Formation and development of the museum is closely associated with the name of academician Dmitry Ivanovich Yavornytsky, who was the director of the museum for more than 30 years since 1902.
