A museum is opened on September, 28, 1952 in starosvetskom building, which, according to legend, belonged to the known poet and dramatist V.V.Kapnistu. Building of museum is entered in the List of sights of architecture of national value. Plenty of various evident material, systematized on tematiko-chronologic principle, tells about the vital and creative way of glorious Poltava, founder of new Ukrainian literature, author of «Aeneid», plays of «Natalka Poltavka», «moskal'-magician» Ivana Kotlyarevskogo. The handwritten archive of poet, passed the Public library of the name Pox-mark (With-Petersburg), his personal things, large library of prizhiznennykh editions of writer, works of fine art, is presented in a museum. Among unique exhibits is the first prizhiznennoe edition poemy «Aeneid» of issue 1798 years. Official and civil activity of I. Kotlyarevskogo is deeply lighted up in positions of guard of Building of education of children of poor noblemen, trustee of Poltava eleemosynary establishments, director of the first stationary theater of Poltava.
