In 1748, on initiative of cossack petty officer and public of city, made decision about building a stone temple and November, 8, 1748 concluded a treaty with the architect from New Serbia by Stephen Stabanskim known by then. In investigation different organizational and financial problems to work began only in 1751. For lack of the sufficient financing and other reasons, building lasted up to 1770. This was the first stone cathedral of Poltava. Sizes arrived at him 32 meters in length and 17 meters breadthways. Building of temple was two-storeyed in style of byzantine basilica. Facades were decorated by gablets. Later, almost in 10 years, in 1780 a temple was reconstructed. Finished building two domes above altar part and temple pyatikupol'nim became. On height of the first floor galleries (to it galleries were into a temple) were obustroeny, a stair was for this purpose equipped on galleries and sacristy is reconstructed. Half was at first done from a pottery brick, afterwards he was substituted by cast-iron. A decision about expansion of cathedral was accepted in 1899-1900. Pridel is finished building, galleries are carried to the west, a temple became lighter, more spacious, an area grew almost on 170 square meters, and above an entrance built on two small bath-houses and arched ceiling, two posts were dismantled, galleries were moved to the western wall. In 1847 after transference of bishop department from Pereyaslava to Poltava, a «gradskiy cathedral» became a department. A cathedral was enclosed a brick protection with the forged grates (to 1827 year a protection was wooden). A chetyrekh'yarusnyy iconostasis, majestic, was obustroen in a cathedral, fretted «v French style». There were five thrones in a cathedral: main — in the name Dormition of Presvyatoy our Lady; on the right is a throne of apostles of Peter and Paul; on the left is a throne of prophet of Il'I, which were sanctified on September, 17, 1774. On galleries from a right side is a throne of sainted Arkhistratiga Michael, sanctified on December, 30, 1776, to the left is a throne of sainted velikomuchenicy Varvara, sanctified on June, 10, 1777. A bell tower which had a height 44 meters was saved Divine trade. After destruction of cathedral in 1934 it stood emptiness. In the war-time from 1941 to 1946 the temple of Ioanna Predtechi, which operated here yet from February, 27 in 1787, was picked up thread in it — day of his sanctifying. The bell tower of cathedral after war long time stood ruin, afterwards different workshops took place in it. On a 1100year to Poltava it was decided to restore a bell tower and equip in it the museum of city with a survey ground on an overhead tier. Lately the exhibition of samodeyatel'nykh artists of city found registration in it. Thus, a bell tower was saved up to beginning of 90th, when the processes of destruction of the communist mode began and free religious life became possible. A decision about renewal of cathedral of priyato is in 1999, it is finished in 2005. Author of project V. Trigubov, he saved the height of cathedral — 44.07 mcodes, but to want of financing he was removed from works and on a project «Gorstroyproekta» a height made 37.5 meters. Seven bells poured off the «Poltava teplovozoremontnyy factory on OAO». Now the Svyato-uspenskiy cathedral belongs to Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kievan Patriarchy, not sanctified, a bell tower, sanctified in 1787, was saved, in which long time after destruction of church a temple was arranged.
