Sumy Drama and Musical Comedy Theater was founded in Lubny in 1933 on the basis of the Kharkiv Mobile Workers' and Collective Farm Theater. In 1939, together with the creation of the Sumy region, the theater was transferred to Sumy. During the Second World War, the theater performed in the cities of Chkalovsk (now Orenburg) region Buguruslan, Buzuluk and others. In 1989, a monument to Mikhail Shchepkin was erected on the Theater Square in front of the building. In the theater's repertoire, in addition to Ukrainian classics, there were also world ("Gypsy Baron" by Johann Staus) and Russian (tragedy "Poisoned Tunic" by Nikolai Gumilev), as well as examples of modern drama: scenes from English life through the eyes of Frenchwoman "Horse in Unconsciousness" by Françoise Sagan, tragicomedy "Love for Three" by A. Shizgal, tragicomedy "Duke of Gonzago" by N. Iordanov, tragicomedy "House of Madmen" by E. Scarpetti, as well as entertaining and operetta shows "Night at the Masquerade", "Millennium", an evening of operetta "In the arms of the lady of the operetta." The theater is an active participant in the competitive and festival life of Ukraine. The Sumy Drama and Musical Comedy Theater hosts citywide events, as well as events dedicated to the celebration of state, professional and unofficial holidays.
