The citadel of the Baturyn fortress is an architectural and memorial complex on the territory of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve "Hetman Capital" in the city of Baturyn, Chernigov region. The territory of the Citadel from the north and south was bounded by two precipitous ravines, to which the moat went; from the east - the high edge of the terrace r. Diet (river). In plan, the Citadel has the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners measuring 130 x 100 m. Since its construction in the first third of the 17th century. The citadel served as a Polish outpost, and in 1669-1708 - the official residence of the hetmans Demyan Ignatovich, Ivan Samoilovich and Ivan Mazepa. In November 1708, during the Baturin massacre, this place was the epicenter of hostilities, the remains of large-scale destruction and numerous burials of victims were shown. In memory of the victims of the Baturin tragedy of 1708 - the defenders and civilians of Baturin, the capital of Hetman Mazepa, who died at the hands of General A. Menshikov on November 13 (2), 1708, a Monument to the victims of the Baturin tragedy was erected in 2004 on the territory of the Baturin castle. The exposition complex of the Citadel of the Baturin Fortress includes: Monument to the victims of the Baturin tragedy of 1708 (2004), eleven objects built in 2008 (moat, bridge, main passage tower, northern and southern castle towers, defensive wall, palisade, Church of the Resurrection Lord's, hetman's house, treasury, well), 7 cannons on carriages (copies of Cossack artillery), three anchors of the 18th-19th centuries (transferred to permanent storage by the Khortytsya National Reserve), millstones of Baturin water mills.
