Transcarpathian Regional Art Museum named after Joseph Bokshay is one of the centers of culture and art of our region. It has gone through a difficult path of its formation and development for more than half a century. It all started in June 1945, when several rooms in Uzhhorod Castle were transferred to the exposition of the former Zemsky Art Gallery. They opened for fans of fine arts in November 1948. As the years went by, the museum exposition was replenished with exhibits from private collections, as well as from museums in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Lviv. The funds needed new space. And in the fall of 1979, our museum moved to the historic center of Uzhgorod, to the imposing building of the former county, an architectural monument of 1809, a model of classical art, where it is to this day. For significant achievements in popularizing the fine arts of the region in 1990, the museum was named after the luminary of the Transcarpathian school of painting - People's Artist of the USSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts Joseph Bokshay.
