Reservoirs: Dnister River Founded: 1002 Background: One of the oldest cities in Ukraine. The official date of foundation is 1002, when Kiev Prince Vladimir the Great created a system of border fortresses in the south-western borders of the ancient Russian state. Khotyn wooden fortress on the bank of the Dnister was built on the site of an ancient Slavic settlement. In the 13th century. by order of Prince Danylo Galytskyi was built a stone fortress Hotinskaya, which became an outpost of the Galicia-Volyn principality, then Moldova. Until the 18th century. the city remained under Turkish rule, from time to time going to the Poles. For example, in 1621 the Polish-Cossack troops withstood a siege in Khotyn thousands of Turkish army, which was stopped due to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in the west. Russian troops in the 18th century. twice stormed Khotyn, but only after the Russian-Turkish war of 1806-1812 years. Khotyn joined the Russian Empire. In 1918, Khotyn Romania captured, brutally suppressed the uprising a year later anti-Romanian. In 1944 the city was liberated. Now it is a developing tourist center with a weak infrastructure yet.
