                  Title: City Vyshgorod Status: The city of district level in the Kiev region of Ukraine, the administrative center of Vyshgorodskiy area. Location: Located in about 16 km from Kiev on the Dnieper River. Population: Population - 27 251 inhabitants Area: 4968 hectares Waterways: River Dnieper, Kiev reservoir. Established in: 946 Historical note: Vyshgorod was founded in the tenth century on the high hills of the right bank of the Dnieper, near an important crossing of the trade routes. Firstly was built as a fortress, which was surrounded by a thick wood and earthen fortifications: ramparts, moats. People used three roads to get there : the East - from the valley of the Dnieper and the ferry, the South - from Kiev, the North - from the Polesie way. Vyshgorod was the closest to the capital residence of the great princes of Kiev. In the tenth century it was called in honor of the Grand Princess - “grad Olzhyn”. Volodymyr the Great kept his slaves here. In times of Yaroslav the Wise, Vyshgorod was a significant spiritual center of Kyiver Rus. In 1020 there were kept remains of the first martyrs - Boris and Gleb. Yaroslaviches (in 1072) built a wooden church of St. Boris and Gleb. Yaroslav`s grandchildren: Sviatopolk, Vladimir Monomakh and Oleg Svyatoslavich in 1115 built a large stone church, the mausoleum and burial of princes adorned with gold and jewels. At that time it was the largest church in Kyiver Rus. In 1115, Vladimir Monomakh built near Vyshgorod first bridge across the Dnieper. Since the late XI - early XII century. the city became an important economic center of Central Naddniprianshchyna, where quickly developed pottery, and jewelry and mining manufacturing. Vyshgorod became the object of the award, but is not converted into separate fiefdoms, and is a suburb of Kyiv. From the middle of XII century. the role of Vyshgorod was gradually reduced. At the time of the Lithuanian Vyshgorod is a small village. War for Independence in 1648-1654 and Ruin, which followed after her, finally destroyed Vyshgorod as a city. In XVIII century Vyshgorod - the usual Kiev village, where lived 228 serfs in 47 houses (1787). In 1900 in Vyshgorod lived 1500 people in 272 houses, which are engaged in gardening, home crafts and goods making. Until 1960`s Vyshgorod remained a small village, but in 1964 began a construction of GES. Then it was rebuilt as a settlement of GES workers and then as the city center of Vyshgorodskiy area. The main attractions of the city: Boris and Gleb Church, Pottery Museum, the Historical Museum of Vyshgorodskiy Historical and Cultural Reserve, Kyiv hydroelectric power station, the ski center "Vyshgora"
