                  The museum was founded on September 26, 1900 in one of the rooms of the Konotop Zemstvo. The first head of the museum was MP Kandyba. Alexander Matviyovych Lazarevsky, a well-known historian of the Left Bank of Ukraine, and Stepan Ivanovich Ponomarev, a well-known bibliographer and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, worked with him and created the chronicle of the Konotop region. The museum has 9 exhibition halls, which present nature, the historical past of the region. The hall of outstanding figures of the region and the hall of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 occupy an honorable place. The ethnography of the region is presented in the expositions "Ukrainian House" and "Konotop Witch in Characters". The permanent exhibition "By Malevich's Ways: Stop - Konotop" was opened in the small exhibition hall. The large exhibition hall exhibits personal exhibitions of contemporary Ukrainian artists and stock collections.
